SVN has been updated with the changes recommended by Paulo to support the 
proper byte output. Hopefully it will produce the correct output now for RTF 
files.

No. It's iText job to guarantee that the conversion from a String to a 
byte[] is done using an explicit encoding and not rely on the machine 
encoding. This is done in PDF but in RTF you have lots of:

private static final byte[] ROW_CELL_SPACING_RIGHT = "\\trspdr".getBytes();

This should be:

private static final byte[] ROW_CELL_SPACING_RIGHT = 
DocWriter.getISOBytes("\\trspdr");
