As one of the loudest critics of resource wastes, but without specific
knowledge of the code or algorithm involved, I would suggest you try
looking around sun.com for java profiling tools ( links have been posted here
earlier IIRC) and skim through the source code. It could in fact be that there 
are simple
things you can do to speed up the parts you care about if you can find specific 
offenders.
Of course, once you consume enough memory, that should reduce the amount
of green you see on task manager as you start using VM a lot...
