I'm saying that the using unicode encoding for the black square (http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/25a0/index.htm) doesn't work with any of the fonts that come with iText. As in my first message, writing "\u25A0" won't work.
That's because the encoding is different: you're assuming that Unicode is supported in the standard type 1 font Zapfdingbats. That's a misconception.
Yep, I'm saying that it didn't work, and I did consult ISO-32000-1 as advised. For the black square it says name = a73 and code = 156. Using (char)156 didn't work either. Could you please be so kind as to tell me how exactly I consulted it wrong?
Your are confusing 0110 with 110!
The table in ISO-32000-1 is expressed in octals.
156 in octals = 110 in decimals.
Or in Java lingo: (char)156 = (char)0156
That example uses 110 which is a star according to ISO-32000-1.
No it isn't. A star is (char)72 or (char)0110 if you prefer.
