I tried, but it doesn't work.
To the example in section 8.6.2 of the 2nd edition of the book by Bruno, I
added two text fields:
1) txtName in the MasterPage
2) txtCompany below the movie subform

I modified the xml adding two tags: Here below an excerpt from my new
version of the movies.xml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<movies>
        <txtName>Jon Doe</txtName>
        <movie duration="141" imdb="0062622" year="1968"> (...) </movie>
        <movie duration="88" imdb="0423866" year="2004">   (...) </movie>
              (...)
             <movie duration="86" imdb="0402595" year="2004">   (...)
</movie>
        <txtCompany>NewCo Inc</txtCompany>
</movies>

Unfortunately txtName and txtCompany are not filled with the expected
values.

All of the data generated in your IT infrastructure is seriously valuable.
Why? It contains a definitive record of application performance, security
threats, fraudulent activity, and more. Splunk takes this data and makes
sense of it. IT sense. And common sense.
