The systemd log garbage is a red herring.
run 'export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/5000' and then run 'weston-info'.
This tool will give you information about the output's that wayland sees
via the 'wl_output' entries. If you have more then one input then you
basically have multiple display devices, and the homescreen might be
rendering on the part of the screen out of view.
On my new-to-me BB system, i have an HDMI and a VGA port. I was
initially just connecting the HDMI port and only seeing the edge of the
homescreen since the kernel was reporting two display outputs with the
first being the VGA output.
In my case i explicitly disabled VGA1 by
editing /etc/xdg/weston/weston.ini and adding the following entry:
