There are two encoder firmware versions in widespread use. Version 0x02040011
and 0x02050032. I haven't been able to tell the difference between the two in
practical use. Given a choice I'd go for the newer one (after all, there must
be a reason they released a new version :-)
Other encoder firmware versions might or might not work. But these two are
known to be good. Without any information on what the changes are in the
firmware you just have to go on the experiences of people.
The decoder software has been the same for ages, so there's no problem there.
The audio firmware for the cx25840-based cards has two versions, one is 13883
bytes long, the newer is 14264 bytes long. I have seen anecdotal evidence
that the newer firmware has better detection of certain audio formats.
