Try:

$ cat /dev/video1 | mplayer -

as that seems to work better than

$ mplayer /dev/video1

on my machine.  (Maybe OS buffering helps?)  But mplayer's playback is
often jerky/non-linear: normal rate, stop, fast rate, normal rate,
stop ...

Looking at the "modprobe cx18 debug=32" and "strace -o foo
mplayer /dev/video1", I'm pretty sure that mplayer's problems are not
related to select()/poll(), as mplayer doesn't appear to call them for
the fd of the cx18 device node.  Mplayer always gets the 2048 bytes it
asks for on every read().

Yeah the sound from my HVR-1600 is softer than from my PVR-150MCE.
