Sounds like you don't have a video signal (is the cable hooked up to the
analog tuner assembly's TV input?)

Maybe you're not on a good channel.  Try

$ ivtv-tune -L
Frequency Maps:
us-bcast
us-cable
[...]
argentina
australia-optus

$ ivtv-tune -d /dev/video0 -t us-bcast -c 4
/dev/video0: 67.250 MHz

To tune to the frequency of channel 4 in the US broadcast channel
allocation (for example).


$ v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --log-status

and look for a video signal being detected as "Present".
