Alan,

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely give this a try. I don't believe
the board I'm using is a (faulty) VIA chipset. Is there a way to
confirm this in /proc or similar? I suspect the board being used by my
friend is in fact a VIA chipset, and I'll recommend he search for an
updated BIOS since you mentioned a possible fix there too.
