I found that if I load the fbcon module (or compile it in) then
something happens to my console, but it still doesn't show up on my
TV. My TV continues to display X Windows, even when I do
Control-Alt-F1. The VGA monitor display gets all messed up: it shows
each line of text starting a bit to the right of the previous line,
and it is frozen like this.

Having the console on vesafb or vga16fb on my VGA monitor works fine.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Does anyone else have this
working? If so, please post kernel version, ivtv version and relevant
parts of kernel config (e.g. grep FRAME .config and grep _FB .config).
What kernel command line is used (cat /proc/cmdline)?

Thanks,

Dan
