Well I finally upgraded to the 2.6 kernel and fought the ir remote and
that is working. However, I can't get the consoles on the tv out
either. When fbcon loads I get

Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 90x30

I didn't check what happens to vga out when this happens but I only
have the ivtv framebuffer. I thought maybe the 90x30 was the problem
but I could not coax it into any other mode with vga=.

fbset gives me:

mythtv:/home/matt# fbset

mode "720x480-74"
    # D: 34.565 MHz, H: 37.247 kHz, V: 73.902 Hz
    geometry 720 480 720 480 32
    timings 28931 88 32 16 4 88 4
    rgba 8/0,8/8,8/16,8/24
endmode
