John, I see exactly the same problem. This is a pretty accurate description.
The black screen thing is just an annoyance. I don't know if it is related but I also get a frontend hang when skipping forward or backwards in a recording. This is infrequent but seems to happen more on skip back. It always leaves the skip OSD half faded on the screen. If you kill the frontend, when you get back to the desktop (KDE in my case) there are usually some weird transparency effects lying about. Something is going wrong with the alpha.
