I've tracked this down to the tuner.ko that gets installed by ivtv. On gentoo, when I rename /lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r6/ivtv/tuner.ko to .old, re-run depmod (to pickup the tuner.ko in kernel/drivers/media) and reboot it apparently works:
