I've been trying to get a PVR-500MCE working on my dual Xeon machine and
I'm having real problems. I'm replacing a PVR-250 which seemed to work
fine but I need/want the dual tuners. This is all on a FC3 system
running 2.6.12 SMP.

I have built the most recent ivtv (0.3.6z), pulled the drivers from the
CD (and tried downloading) and put them in /lib/modules. If I'm not
careful how I load modules the entire machine hangs but I'm not to the
point where I do the following:

modprobe tveeprom
modprobe videodev
modprobe ivtv

and it usually completes but it takes a while

Strange that you can't just modprobe ivtv. Are the kernel versions of any of the modules still around and getting loaded?

I don't think so. I've deleted the ones that the ivtv build suggests I
delete and to be sure I copied them from the
/lib/modules/2.6.12-prep/ivtv/ directory to the corresponding kernel
drivers directory.

tveeprom: The eeprom says no radio is present, but the tuner type
tveeprom: indicates otherwise. I will assume that radio is present.
tveeprom: Hauppauge: model = 23552, rev = D592, serial# = 2995308

D592... Not one I'm familiar with, mine's a D492. I didn't see any mention of the tda9887 in your dmesg output though, and I think you'll need it.

Hmmm, thought that was there. I'll have to check and try that again to
make sure.

That's weird. Are the firmware in your /lib/modules from the CD that came with your card, or are they downloaded from somewhere? You might try the ones from your CD.

I've tried the ones from the CD and the suggested ones from the download
site. Same MD5SUM on them regardless of where I get them and the
correct one, as far as I can tell.

modprobe.conf contents are:

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-81-1 ivtv

No options here? Might try this :
options ivtv tda9887=0,0 ivtv_debug=1,1

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
options w83781d ignore=-1,0x290

I have no idea what this is. Hope you do.

lm_sensors support. :) As suggested by sensors-detect.

I'd try the tda9887 option first, then start looking for and renaming older kernel modules, then try different firmwares.

Different firmware going BACK in time? It really looks like it just
can't find/read the firmware and that's driving me nuts. /lib/modules
is the right place, right? No other spot? No kernel option that
prevents firmware from loading or changes where its found?

Irksome, especially since the PVR-250 I replaced in this machine works
right off the bat...

Thanks for the pointers, though. I appreciate the help. I'm not
completely illiterate with this stuff though its been years since I've
messed around much with the kernel. IF there's any further debug
options I can play with that helps out anyone, let me know.
