A quick update: I strongly suspect the cx25840 and in particular the firmware
that is being loaded. I had a lucky run today where the second unit of the
PVR550 had no sound and I've pretty much excluded the tuner, tda9887 and
wm8775 chips as possible causes.
However, the firmware that is uploaded to the cx25840 is precisely the part
that is responsible for the audio detection. If I rename the firmware file
(so no firmware is uploaded) I get the same symptoms: video OK, no sound. So
tomorrow I'm going to look closer to the firmware handling (add code to read
back the firmware and check if it is the same) and see if there are other
oddities that might cause problems.
