Before recompiling, I decided to shut down arts, having found something
during my searches that indicated problems with a TV card. I also
disabled OSS emulation for ALSA in /etc/sysconfig. I then shut down my
PC for a couple of minutes and restarted it (note, I've done this
several times over the past couple of days with no success).

I started by doing the cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg test, and was stunned
to find sound working... I then incrementally re-enabled ARTS - still
got sound - and OSS emulation (mplayer /dev/video0 displayed only a
blank screen until I did this. I've subsequently looked at the man page
and it looks like there is an option to force ALSA use). I still have
sound working and am currently watching OK.

There are still some issues - tvtime shows "no signal" and doesn't give
me a menu option to check it's set for NTSC and US Cable - it also seems
to hang the card, as running cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg results in a 0
length file. kdetv also locks up when started.

Are these applications sensitive to the signal received? Do I need to do
anything special to get them working, or should I just go with MythTV
(which I haven't installed yet).

My next (and hopefully, final) test is to do a cold boot again to
determine if any of the changes I've made cause impacts on restart. I'll
report on this later.

Thanks for all the help.
