I am having the same problems right now with 0.4.2 Tuner1 is good
/dev/video1 but /dev/video0 has issues with clarity and sound the sound I
get is very distorted voices and sound like it coming from an old scratchy
78 (Album) also a few his pops here and there.

I have DCT2500 (cable box) which is hooked up via Svideo or Composite still
make same sound.

Can you try attached patch to the tuner.c source? I have no idea if this 
will work, but it's worth a try.
