Hi all,

I did a kernel change/upgrade on my Debian Stable/Sarge box, and
afterwards, I couldn't get the firmware to load. Well, I wanted to
capture this for the archives. It seems like such a bizarre thing, that
I doubt others will run into it, but just in case.

My original goal was to upgrade to a 2.6.15 or 16 kernel from
backports.org, in order to support a new to me, but old air2pc card.
But that was causing me some grief with a my onboard SATA controller and
a JFS based LV. So, I decided to back out the 2.6.15 kernel, and
reinstall my 2.6.8-2 kernel. Well, Debian had also upgraded the kernel
to 2.6.8-3, so I had to rebuild my modules package and reinstall the
modules. That's when the fun started.

Anyway, after much pain and heartache, it turns out that somewhere along
the process, the hotplug package lost a small, but apparently crucial
file, /etc/hotplug.d/default/default.hotplug. This is the file that
handles all non-specific events, and in this case, invokes the
/etc/hotplug/firmware.agent. Without that file, the firmware load
request was being dropped into a black hole.

Like I said, it's probably a very rare, and highly unlikely scenario,
but if others are getting a -3 while trying to load their firmware, and
they are sure that the firmware is located in the proper hotplug
directory, it is one more piece of the puzzle to investigate.
