This is actually a very good idea, if no player is available (I tired with 
kalva yesterday and when I try to connect it to the /dev/video entries it gives 
me an error accessing the device, so I don't think it works!). Do you know if 
there is a way to record what I am watching? do you think it will work if I, 
while watching with mplayer, launch from the command line or a script a 
parallel process that pipes the output of the device to a mpg fil?. I cannot 
try it until I get home from work!

Something like

mplayer /dev/video0 to watch and at the same time in another console, cat 
/dev/video > recorded.mpg

I can write a gui for this simple thing myself!
