Hey, thanks for your help.

For completeness, here is the resolution to my issue:

I didn't understand that the ivtv-tune was to be used
to tune my card for channel 3 or 4 - whatever the set
top box was set to.

Once I stumbled on to that, the tuner works great
(minus getting the serial cable going - that's next.)

Thank you for your suggestions.
