just as an fyi it says on myth 20 version releas:

Menus are now drawn by MythUI <http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/MythUI>using
OpenGL <http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/OpenGL>. This option can be
enabled/disabled in the Appearance settings.

so theoretically you should only need to turn off menu drawing with OpenGL
and then the ubutnutu howto should work
