I use gxine:

$ ivtv-tune --channel=56
$ cat /dev/video0 | gxine stdin:/

The downside is, if you want to change channel, you have to exit gxine
and then rerun the above commands with the different channel number.
I don't know another way to watch live TV.

Here is a little script to make this easier:

#!/bin/sh
#
# Watch TV.
#

if [ -z "$1" ]; then
    progname=`basename $0`
    echo "Watch TV."
    echo "Usage:   $progname channel"
    echo "Example: $progname 56"
else
    channel=$1
    ivtv-tune --channel=$channel
    cat /dev/video0 | gxine stdin:/
fi

Hope this helps,

Ljubomir

Subject: [ivtv-users] Which linux app to watch the mpeg-2 stream "live"?
Date: Wed, 23 May 2007 00:32:27 +0100

Hi all.

I've got recording down pat (then again, it's not exactly difficult):
cat /dev/video0 > blah.mpg

But what linux app do people use to watch their mpeg-2 stream live?
I've tried mplayer, xine, gxine, and vlc, and none of them are happy.
I'd love to hear whether people have been successful with "live"
monitoring...

Ta, Jaime :-)
