These commands appear to have mplayer nicely display 1080i, 16:9
stations on a 1280x1024 display:

Fullscreen:

$ mplayer dvb://WFOO-HD -framedrop -cache 8192 -ni -fs -vf scale=1280:720

or window:

$ mplayer dvb://WFOO-HD -framedrop -cache 8192 -ni -vf scale=960:540


Scaling like this consumes a lot of CPU time though.
