Well,

A small update.  I realized that I had only commented out the "RC_COLDPLUG=yes" line in /etc/conf.d/rc.

I then explicitly changed the  line to "RC_COLDPLUG=no" per http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-519893-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-letting+udev+process+events-start-25.html.  This allowed me to boot into my kernel image with the appropriate options set to emerge ivtv.  So I emerged ivtv, and it built.  So happy.

But then my system freezes when I "modprobe ivtv" or add ivtv to the list of modules to load at boot time.  ARGGGG.

I have already commented out the firmware udev rule per http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Troubleshooting#Lock_up_when_loading_ivtv_module_.28udev_related.29.  I also deleted the /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent file per the same post.

Any thoughts.  I guess the next this I can do is downgrade udev per http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Troubleshooting#udev_causes_ivtv_to_lock_the_system, but I have been using a recent version of udev for the last six months.

My impression for various posts is that how udev, hotplug, and coldplug interact are somewhat it flux, so some of the posts I looked at are outdated.  Any up to date reference on these?

Lost again.

Thanks
Mike

Hey there,

I have been using gentoo as my distro on my mythtv system for about a half a year, and now I am dead in the water.

I have a lengthy post at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-694470.html, but no ideas on how to solve my issue have occurred.

Basics of my system:
    gentoo
    x86
    PVR-500
    PVR-350

So all of sudden (not sure what precipitated this issue), I cannot get past udev coming up whenever I have my kernel configured as needed to support the ivtv driver.

I have started from the default kernel configuration, made minor changes for my system (processor, file systems, and SATA control), and I can boot into that kernel.  I should mention that at this time I have unmerged the user space part of ivtv (emerge --unmerge ivtv).  So I then made the four changes per http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Howto:Gentoo:
- Device Drivers -> Multimedia Devices -> Video For Linux (CONFIG_VIDEO_DEV)
- Device Drivers -> I2C support (CONFIG_I2C)
- Device Drivers -> Multimedia Devices -> Enable Video For Linux API 1 (DEPRECATED) (CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L1)
- Device Drivers -> Multimedia Devices -> Video capture adapters -> Conexant cx23416/cx23415 MPEG encoder/decoder support (CONFIG_VIDEO_IVTV)

Build the kernel, boot into it, and my freezing issue occurs.  It seems that whatever I do that if I enable the above options, my kernel will freeze.  This after using different source versions and using genkernel.

As can be seen in my gentoo post, I have tried numerous troubleshooting steps which have all results in no progress ( in my mind).

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!!!

On the bright side, at least I can boot into a system which is fully functional except for creating new recordings.

Thanks
Mike
