You could also use aalib to get an ASCII "picture" of the data, using
jp2a or somesuch [1].  Or, if you have several seconds of recording,
you could do your analysis in the audio domain (I'm assuming your red
screens are also silent); see [2] for an example.  (Though [2]'s real
purpose is detecting silence embedded in longer recordings, or EAS
bursts, the general idea would be easy to adapt.)
