It was the talk of a quick interim release that sent me down that path.

In addition there was:

And leaving things in cvs means as well that no one will use it too.
'significant effort and testing' is empirical as well.
Of course if we release things that constantly break previous version,
it's no fun.

Chicken and egg problem.
