Sorry for the slow reply - we have all been on xmas hols. It would be great to get you involved. Taking a look at the tests would be a great way to learn the code base. Some of the tests (such as the xinclude ones) also need moving out at some point so that xerces-c can use them as and when it implements things.

Its also certainly worth taking a look at jira and see what people have put for enhancement requests. If you want a larger project there are also things like relaxNG to consider.
