That's excellent!
We're just getting the ball rolling in XML Commons [1] to upgrade the API
sources from JAXP 1.3 to 1.4. There are a few issues which need to be
worked out before that happens, but that doesn't prevent development
from beginning here. There's certainly lots to do and help is very much
welcome.

I would be interested in helping out with this, if that would be of any help
to you. Over the next couple of weeks I'm a bit maxed out, but after that I
should have a certain amount of time that I'd happily contribute. While I
haven't contributed any features to the codebase in the past, I have been
digging around in the guts of Xerces-J for a couple of years now! Considering
how much value we've got out of it I'd love to be able to give something
back...
