I wonder whether there are reproducibly extractable metadata in PDF. They should be put into a previously and general accepted structure that they could be automatically extracted and used for example in a jabref wrapper. Given the amount of publishers around I doubt that will ever be the case. All of them have their proprieatary game to play. The DOI by itself is already much of an achievement, which however is an encoded away from the text, but once you have it, you can get a document into Jabref.
