Maybe it's worth considering to add support for one (or more) i.MX8 board to

Default is upstream (well, the jailhouse branch from 4.19 upstream), also in order to share the build with other ARM64 boards. But if upstream should not boot or lack essential features, we could deviate.

What are the remaining differences in your tree? Maybe carrying a few patches may work as well.
