There are a lot. Wbus is one of them, used to communicate the wisp programmer.

Currently, I don't.
But I'v dealt with a lot of serial protocols in the past and would
suggest you choose a protocol with the following features:
- independent framing - you should be able to parse the frame without
understanding the content.
- checksum as part of the frame.
- have a command byte (or frame type) field at a pre-defined place.
- allow full 8-bit transfer of data. This means you have to do
something special to transfer the framing char - an escape char is the
most easy to implement.
On top of this you could:
- add a data lenght field in the frame.
- add an address field in the frame.

Just had a quick peek but did not see the specification. Did see it is
based on midi and iirc, this is a 7-bit protocol. Not my choice.

There are a lot of pc development platforms around and I think it is
hard to support all of them. And most people don't choose their
platform based on a protocol.
I think the only exception might be visual basic. This is commonly
used by less-experienced users (that don't write their own protocol
implementation).

So I think there is limited value (but I am mostly pessimistic about
these kind of initiatives...).
But if you do plan to start work on this, make it also work with USB pic's.
