Mostly for new-comers:
The device files are quite stable, and since quite some time the changes
have been local/specific (were of no influence on other parts of a
device file). I don't believe this trend will be broken.
A new set of device files is always validated and run through the
compiler with a blink-an-LED program before being released. This is a
very limited test of course. But with specific issues - like recently
with using LATx in stead of PORTx in 'get functions of the 18Fs - I
always do additional specific tests (with at least 3 quite different
PICs). And I also do a 'diff' check with the previous version to detect
undesired side effects.
The TORELEASE list will contain only the device files and blink-an-LED
samples which I have tested myself successfully or have been reported by
others to work OK (exactly 1 so far!).
I'm still searching for method to obtain good default fuse settings for
the 18Fs. The MPLAB files are not very helpful in this respect, the .dev
files do specify all possible settings, but do not even specify the
'reset' state or 'recommended' settings as published in the datasheet or
programming specifications. This means that for every individual PIC the
datasheet should be consulted to obtain a workable default. Interpreting
the datasheets is a lot of work, and also some administration is
required to remember which PICs are done and which not. Not my favorite
type of entertainment!
The alternative is to let the user specify all fuse settings, and in the
devicefiles.html I recommend this. But I doubt that many people will
read it, let alone follow the recommendations...
