Thanks! The 16f886 behaves now as expected! Switching on/off and fading 
in/out works now the same as with the 16f876A. It seems you hit the nail 
on the head.
In the meantime I had a look in the PWM lib and was about to suggest to 
initialise the shadow registers (I had a discussion with Kyle about 
initialising shadow registers in the device files).

I'll wait a little with further tests (PWM2, etc).
