It's so annoying how few projects support punch cards. If the the new
cross platform IDE proposed doesn't support punch cards I'm not
interested...

I've had situations with ARM and x86 linux and compiling GPL open
source C that came with makefile etc...

1* Needed obsolete x86 Linux to test x86 version as the way that
PCMCIA works has changed.
2* Needed ancient version of complier
3* Porting to ARM when 1 & 2 solved and driver working on PC. Ha ha ha
ha.. (we did get an ARM version working and a MIPS version for
OpenWRT, but very painful time consuming Guru process).

While I understand the sentiments of the original post regarding Make,
that is an extreme view. To test/rebuild an arbitrary old project on
Windows it's likely that Win98, XP and Win7 covers all. *NIX needs
much more versions. My NT3.1 tools and source for Modula-2 work fine
on XP SP3. I have ancient CDI hardware (enormous ISA Card) and video
Editing designed for Win3.1 16 bit mode that works on last version of
Win98 (assuming you can find a MoBo with ISA slot!). Actually my 32bit
code compiled for NT3.1 works on Win32s on WFWG3.11 and on XP (without
WOW).

I've  been using C & *NIX since 1985. C++ since 1987!  There may be
better ways of doing stuff than scripts and makefiles. Lets not get
stuck in 1976. After while Linux has come on great it and OS X have
only about 5% world wide between them and are based on a 1976 design.
NT is not DOS, though with Vista and Win7 MS is trying to make it
poorer.

I agree we should try to have cross platform development but if it's a
choice between installing a card reader on all OSes and having an
Eclipse Clunker of an IDE or having the Notepad ++ or JalEdit on
Windows only, I'd tell the other 5% of users to sort their BootCamp/
Wine/VMware/XEN whatever.

5% of users can't demand we stay in 1976.

P.S. I really did start programming in 1967 (after school) and in 1974
was allowed to punch my own cards.
