Try doing realtime or verified designs on Java or Linux or OS X or
Windows.

 Looks like building tools

C was invented as a Cross platform high level Assembler so as to make
porting UNIX easy.

The previous was a somewhat extreme post in reaction, to be taken
lightly.

I have no photos of me doing stuff long ago. I still have prototype of
my 100mm x 160mm Z80 single board controller I made in 1980. I did
have an Apple II (UCSD p & Apple), Sirus 9000 (x86, CP/M86 and MSDOS),
SC/MP board and CP/M computer with 8" drives back in 1980 ..1982.
I did use one of these

as well as one with knob with all 96? or 64? characters! It was for an
ICL system running George.

Windows, Linux and OS X are dead ends. Vista was the event horizon for
Windows and Linux has about reached NT4.0/XP. It runs the danger of
bloat from now on. Computer Science, Multi CPU programming,
Architecture & OS and languages has largely stalled. The last
innovations where ARM, Occam, Transputer and VMS. Stuff just is
cheaper with more storage and more speed in the last 10 years.

We do need efficient, cross platform, reliable tools. But assuming
these MUST work with entirely with a console is unwarranted.
