Yes, it is expensive and a full station (with power supply and standard) is twice the price. In return you get a well-balanced iron of good-quality plastic, flexible teflon wire (no smoke!) and wide range of tips (suitable for small SMD and large RF cases). Anyway: my advice is at least consider an iron with temperature control. Gets to the right temperature quickly, is capable of soldering small and large parts and does not get overheated during stand-by time.
