I have not found any 40 pin PIC's that can use SPI + HDD + USB due to
pinouts. There is currently no spi software lib, but it shouldn't be
hard to make. However, SPI hardware is better/faster. I guess you
could just give SPI software it a try and see if it runs fast enough
for you.

As I said before... I have no use for USB other than for PIC code updates... and I could just use ICSP for that.

Mine was the device that called for a standalone harddisk controller... which was the whole point of SPI.

Without a high speed serial bus to transfer the data from the dedicated hard disk controller to the central PIC... the whole concept falls apart.

I need the expandability that separating the hard drive controller gives me.

Other suggestions, Have you thought about also connecting a SD card
slot?

I have thought about it. For adding more music to the drive archive, slow though that method is.

As primary storage? Not a chance. Too small, too slow.

Remember too... I'm the one who plans on testing your 48bit pata lib.

Drives smaller than 200GB are _/*worthless*/_ to me.

For transferring data, I think there is a way to use a real hard
disk to USB adapter inline with your circuit. Be creative :)

I had thought of that, and I suspect it'd be possible.
Though some means of detecting when a drive is in use would then be necessary.
