Well, you might take a look at the 'fuse filesystem' -- it is
available for many operating systems, and would provide 'native
support' for nearly any 'homebrew' filesystem you might care to dream
up.   This might allow you to have a very simple JAL library, and yet
still have 'native support' on your PC or other 'big computer.
