I don't recall why we did choose for the strict JSG rule "user program is responsible for pin direction". Relaxing this rule seems reasonable in situations where pin assignment is dictated by hardware. The corresponding library would become responsible for proper pin-direction setting.
This would become a general rule, not only for serial_hardware. So probably also other libraries may have to be adapted (SPI, I2C, etc). And samples might have to be adapted too.
