the soon-to-come family of 18(L)FxxK42 chips does finally have hardware parity support.
I've given the datasheet of these a quick look and saw many new names for USART-related registers and their bitfields (incl interrupt flags). Aliases could help somewhat, but will not give support for new functionality like built-in flow control and parity handling. And I think the many required aliases will make the libraries (or device files) virtually unmaintainable. So this group of PICs probably requires new USART libraries anyway.
W.r.t. software parity-checking: the PIClist software collection contains also some examples which might be more efficient than your example. See http://www.piclist.com/techref/microchip/math/bit/parity.htm
