Yes, the parity calculating examples you linked to do save half of the 
instructions compared to my assembler solution :-)
While for the 18(L)FxxK42 chips a new set of USART libs might be helpful, still 
the selection of the library group could be automated so that the user would 
not always need to select the right group of libs himself.

I've given the datasheet of these a quick look and saw many new names 
for USART-related registers and their bitfields (incl interrupt flags). 
Aliases could help somewhat, but will not give support for new 
functionality like built-in flow control and parity handling. And I 
think the many required aliases will make the libraries (or device 
files) virtually unmaintainable. So this group of PICs probably requires 
new USART libraries anyway.

W.r.t. software parity-checking: the PIClist software collection 
contains also some examples which might be more efficient than your
