It's a cross-compiled opendjk runtime (15Mb worth) that is supposed to provide a desktop like experience from within a browser window. It also provides a Cheerpj Java Runtime plugin for chrome that is supposed to be able to run applets directly from their bytecode. I tried it with JalviewLite - no joy - but may be worth looking at. They say that if you ask them they will have a go at making applets work with their system...
