Steve,
They may very well have some load balancing going on, but that is something
they need to do on their end. When we connect, we connect to an IP address.
If there is only one IP address, it is their onus to load balance.
As far as I can tell, this trick of theirs actually fools deliverying
servers into retrying more frequently rather than waiting. As it is right
now, we'd timeout after 10 minutes and go to the next and the next, but if
we fail the e-mail, we retry 6 hours later.

I'd suggest not condensing the MX records based on IP address.
