I agree that having a common spool for SMTP and NNTP would require pretty
significant change.  That is why I suggested that conceptually, the current
spool manager is really related to the smtpserver, and not an independent
entity.

NNTP doesn't share the same repository code. The main reason why I did it
that way was because I could not find a way to (a) stream messages and (b)
repository code did not seem stable.
Arriving at a uniform repository structure with (a)low memory, (b) low
processing overhead and (c) multi-process friendly would be awesome. But
doing that would mean one has to radically change the design for
processores, mailets etc.
