Yes, writing a JDBC driver became a much more difficult issue, as did
writing a servlet or JSP container. But the CLIENT CODE didn't have the
same problem. James is a client of Avalon interfaces. It should have been
the container's problem to make things work, not the client's.
For years, the mm.mysql driver contained two complete implementations inside
the jar, one for each version of JDBC. But my client code didn't change a
bit when I switched from JDBC v1 to JDBC v2.
I do concur that the lack of a Mailet directory means that Mailet authors
are likely a somewhat savvy bunch.
