Serge having read more of rfc2822 I find this specification for a message
body:

"body            =       *(*998text CRLF) *998text

   The header fields carry most of the semantic information and are
   defined in section 3.6. The body is simply a series of lines of text
   which are uninterpreted for the purposes of this standard."

where text is defined as:

"text = %d1-9 / ; Characters excluding CR and LF
                        %d11 /
                        %d12 /
                        %d14-127 /
                        obs-text"

I believe this states that text is ASCII 1-127 exluding CR and LF.

Therefore I think I can assert, after all, that db TEXT fields are OK for
messages conforming to rfc2822.

I've converted a table to LONGTEXT and am watching the results.
