Anyway, definitely don't want to promote the creation of bad clients, but I can see why an applet developer would want this. What I'd recommend in this case is installing sendmail to accept emails, and then have James run on the backend. We've got docs on the home page for how to set that up. An ugly installation, but it makes the life much easier for the applet writer.
