Joe,
There are various people working on the IMAP code, but no one is focusing on
it as a primary contributor. Your contributions to James would be welcome.
With respect to Avalon, the linkage is pretty clean, so it would be possible
to share code if both projects followed a common model, which we can
discuss.

Howdy folks,
Just wanted to send a ping to the IMAP team to see how it's going. Is
there active work going on to bring IMAP support to james; and if not,
is there anything in particular that's holding it up?
I'm in the process of writing my own Java-based IMAP server, but it
would still please me very much to see James/IMAP. I'd like to offer up
my IMAP research and findings to anyone on the James team that needs
it--for example, right now I am pulling together logs of how some of the
most common clients (Outlook, OE, Netscape/Moz) interact with IMAP
servers. I'm also happy to share my source code as I make progress,
though it will probably be less than useful as it doesn't use the
Avalon(?) framework.
Anyway, if I can be of service to help get IMAP off the ground, please
e-mail me. In the meantime I'll be lurking around on this list, and
posting my own design and implementation notes on my blog:
http://hush.joecheng.com/blog.
Thanks,
-Joe Cheng
