Is it safe to do this?

NO. IMHO this is evil.

OK :-)

Calling System.exit(0) is not something a component should be doing.

Well, we need to shutdown the container/application. What is the
recommended means?

Hopefully there is a means to do this from outside of James.

Can you give me a hint at the underlying rationale for this?

Shutdown down? Restarting with new code or a new configuration?

There are two distrinty different things here:

 - shutdown: take down the entire system
 - redeploy: decommission and recommission incorporating
any changes to deployment information and/or resoruces

The difference is scope.

Perhaps it is something more appropriately handled at the level of a JMX
management operation.

If we had JMX, and it was secure ... ;-)

Phoenix has a JMX access point and I belive that MX4J supports SSL based connections (going on memory here) - so in pricipal this should be possible. MNaybe we should post the question on [EMAIL PROTECTED] ?

Cheers, Steve.
