Windows: at the "run" dongle in the start menu, or at a command prompt type
ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where the x's are your DNS IP address

Linux type same into a terminal window.

response should be like:

Pinging www.thought.co.uk [195.157.97.145] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 195.157.97.145: bytes=32 time=60ms TTL=248
Reply from 195.157.97.145: bytes=32 time=50ms TTL=248
Reply from 195.157.97.145: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=248
Reply from 195.157.97.145: bytes=32 time=50ms TTL=248

Ping statistics for 195.157.97.145:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 50ms, Maximum =  60ms, Average =  52ms

Bad results are timeout's or no response (can't connect)

If this works OK check the config to ensure that you have put the DNS IP
address in the right place (there is a big comment at the top of the file,
wrong place, look further down for the right place) remove all DNS entries
except for ones you know ping.

if this is correct DNS probably isn't the problem.

perhaps DNS results for your recipient are wrong, or the host cant be
reached from your network (unlikely).

to check mail dns records (MX records) type
nslookup[enter]
at a command prompt, followed by
set type=MX[enter]
then
set domain=[domain of the mail address you want to check][enter]
then
[domain you want to check][enter]
result should be like:

Non-authoritative answer:
thought.co.uk preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx3.dircon.net
thought.co.uk preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx2.dircon.net
thought.co.uk preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx1.dircon.net
thought.co.uk preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx0.dircon.net

Authoritative answers can be found from:
mx0.dircon.net internet address = 194.112.50.10
mx3.dircon.net internet address = 195.157.4.3
mx2.dircon.net internet address = 195.157.4.3
mx1.dircon.net internet address = 194.112.50.11

if this checks out then James should be able to find the server, perhaps it
cant be reached, or isn't running SMTP so ..
try:

telnet whateveritis.com 25 [enter]

if you get a welcome message type QUIT[enter]
You have proved that mail can be sent from this computer to that, your
problem is elsewhere !
